What Size Frame Should You Choose for a Personalized Fake Degree?
Once the degree is complete, measure it and select a frame designed for that paper size, or use a larger frame with a mat opening that matches the paper size. The frame lip or mat should only cover the blank edges, leaving the name, message and decorative border exposed. A frame can turn a thoughtful gift into something that will stay on display for years to come. Fit is more important than style, even the most expensive style.
Begin with the Paper, Not the Packaging
Place the degree certificate face up on a clean surface. Measure the entire sheet edge to edge including any white margins. Measure the width and height and note if the design reads horizontally or vertically.
For example, if you have a landscape degree that measures 11 inches across and 8.5 inches high, you will need a frame that will accommodate those measurements.
Do not just measure the printed border. That tells you how much of the design must be visible, but it does not tell you whether the paper will fit.
Note also the proximity of the printing to the edge. Even if the advertized frame size is accurate, a decorative border around the edge of the paper could be lost under a frame lip.

Once these measurements are separated, shopping for frames becomes easier.
Size of paper: full degree, measured from edge to edge.
Visible opening: the area that is visible after the frame lip or mat overlaps the paper.
External frame size: the total wall space the finished frame will take up.
For example, a frame for an 8.5 × 11-inch document will generally have larger outside dimensions. Rather than assuming the advertisement measurement includes the molding, check the specifications of the seller.
If you are using a mat (the surround to the card inside the frame) you will also need its outside dimensions and the size of the cut-out window
Example: One Degree, Two Presentations
Picture a landscape “Champion of the Sunday Barbecue” degree, size 11 × 8.5 inches with all printing at least a half inch from the edges of the paper.
Option A: Fits directly. Select a frame designed for an 8.5 × 11 inch document and rotate it horizontally. Check the opening you can see so that the border is still showing.
Option B: Larger frame and mat. Use a 14 × 11 inch frame, laid flat, with a mat cut to those outside dimensions. A window 10.5 inches wide by 8 inches high, centered on the certificate, would overlap the certificate by a quarter of an inch on each side.
That overlap is appropriate for this example because the printing is further in. It is not a one size fits all specification: a degree with narrower margins requires a different opening or framing approach.
Before ordering a custom mat, test the proposed window using a separate sheet of scrap paper over the degree. Do not ever cut the certificate itself.
Keep the Degree Comfortable Inside the Frame
The paper must not be creased or buckled, but must lie flat. Make sure the frame is deep enough to hold the glazing, degree, backing and any matting or spacers.
If buying it as a souvenir, ask about suitable mounting materials. The Library of Congress framing guidance recommends stable materials and keeping contact with the glazing of paper to a minimum. It also recommends keeping framed paper out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Select pickup location prior to purchase. A frame that looks great on a big wall may be too big for a narrow bookshelf.
