What is the Difference Between a Novelty Fake Diploma and an Official Replacement Diploma?
A novelty fake diploma is a gift, prop or memento without academic standing. The idea behind it is what has value. The phrase “Champion of the Sunday Barbecue” exists for a reason. Everyone remembers the recipient standing by the grill in the rain, determined to get lunch finished.
You can customize the name, title, message and presentation date. An invented issuer like “The Back Garden Culinary Society” helps create the playful context for a clearly fictional award.
However sophisticated the finished piece may appear, it doesn’t document attendance at a university, completion of coursework, or an earned academic qualification.
What Makes a Replacement Diploma Official?
A replacement diploma is issued through the official process of the awarding institution. It substitutes the award document but does not generate a new qualification or modify the academic record of the graduate.
Start with the registrar, graduation office, or staff in student records. If the institution sends you to an outside ordering service, please use the link from the official institution website.
Requirements differ. For example, Harvard’s FAS Registrar’s Office provides replacement procedures for eligible alumni who have lost, had their diplomas stolen or damaged, or changed their names. It requires supporting documentation, and its replacement comes with a statement identifying it as a copy of the original.
That is the process for one institution, not a checklist for all. The rules that apply are those of your own university.
Scenario One: The Missing University Diploma
Priya had graduated some years ago. She moves back home and finds the empty frame, but can’t find the diploma.
