Queensland University of Technology Degree: Modern University

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) is a university in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. Its main campuses are situated in Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove. It provides training and research across engineering, business, health, education and the creative arts. Its teaching is based on practical learning and links with employers, something that has long been reflected in its description as a “university for the real world.”

QUT has operated under its present name since January 1989, but its institutional roots trace back to the Brisbane School of Arts, established in 1849. Before it developed a stronger educational role, the school had a library, lectures and public debates. Technical classes followed and in 1882 the Brisbane Technical College was established. The foundations of the practical teaching tradition that would later inform QUT were laid by these early institutions.

In 1965 a major step was taken with the establishment of the Queensland Institute of Technology at Gardens Point. It had engineering, chemistry, business studies, architecture and building departments. The increasing demand for higher education led to its elevation to university status. The Queensland University of Technology Act was passed in 1988 and the institution renamed QUT in 1989. In 1990 it merged with the Brisbane College of Advanced Education to extend its academic reach, combining further traditions in teacher education, health and the arts. Further details about the institutions that shaped QUT can be found on the university’s official history page.

Education, Heritage and Culture

The university has two major campuses, with a different environment. Gardens Point is adjacent to the Brisbane River, City Botanic Gardens and Parliament House. It also houses teaching facilities, Old Government House, QUT Art Museum and Gardens Theater. The Cube is a giant interactive digital display located in the Science and Engineering Center that uses visual experiences to introduce visitors to scientific concepts. These public spaces provide the campus with a cultural role beyond its everyday academic activities.

Kelvin Grove is an urban village home to much of QUT’s activity in education, health and creative disciplines. Facilities include performance venues, practical learning spaces and the Creative Industries Precinct. The campus embodies the university’s reach, where training for classrooms, healthcare settings and creative professions is part of the same institution.
