University of Washington Diploma: From Territorial School to Leading Research University
The University of Washington (UW) is a public research university located in Seattle, Washington with branches in Tacoma and Bothell. It is one of the oldest public universities on the Pacific Coast, founded in 1861 and evolved from a small territorial college to a large university with recognized programs in teaching, research, medicine and public service.
The university was created as the Territorial University of Washington, decades before Washington became a U.S. state. Classes were first held in Seattle on November 4, 1861 when the city was still in its infancy. The original university was located on the site that would become downtown Seattle.
With the growth of Seattle and the university, the original site became less and less suitable. The university moved in 1895 to its present campus between Lake Washington and Lake Union. Denny Hall, completed that year, was the first major building on the new campus and remains today one of the university’s historic landmarks.
Academic Development and Research
Over the years, the University of Washington evolved into a full-fledged institution offering undergraduate, graduate and professional education in a wide array of disciplines. You can obtain a University of Washington Diploma in arts and humanities, engineering, computer science, business, education, environmental studies, law, public health and medicine.
Research is central to the university’s identity today. UW researchers work in fields from medical science and global health to technology, climate science, engineering and oceanography. The university also has strong ties to the greater Seattle region’s technology, healthcare and aerospace industries.
The University of Washington School of Medicine and the broader UW Medicine system have also played a significant role in medical education, scientific research and healthcare across Washington and the Pacific Northwest for the institution.
The University of Washington has campuses in Seattle (the largest and best known), Bothell and Tacoma, extending its educational programs to other parts of the state. The three campuses together serve more than 60,000 students.
The Seattle campus is particularly noted for its Collegiate Gothic architecture, landscaped grounds and views of Mount Rainier. Buildings such as Suzzallo Library have become icons of the university’s visual identity. The University of Washington was founded more than 160 years ago, and today, the UW is still combining its traditional role as a state university with a wide-ranging international role in research and higher education.
