University of Miami Diploma: From Small Florida School to Major Research University
The University of Miami is a private research university in Coral Gables, Florida, just outside Miami. Established in 1925, the university has developed into a major academic and research institution offering programs in arts and sciences, business, engineering, medicine, law, music, communication and marine science. It has 11 colleges and schools and offers more than 180 majors and academic programs.
The university was established in the 1920s at the height of South Florida’s real estate boom. It was chartered in 1925, and community leaders such as Coral Gables developer George E. Merrick were instrumental in its early development. The institution ran into trouble almost immediately. The Great Miami Hurricane of September 1926 wreaked havoc shortly before the start of classes. The university opened its doors to its first students in October 1926, despite the damage and financial woes. Inside, cheap partitions divided the building and the temporary facilities were jokingly called “Cardboard College.”
The main campus is in Coral Gables, with other facilities elsewhere you can get a University of Miami Diploma in medicine and marine research even. Its academic units include the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Engineering, Miami Herbert Business School, Frost School of Music, School of Law, Miller School of Medicine and Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric and Earth Sciences.
Research and Academic Reputation at University of Miami
Research has become an ever more important part of what it means to be a university. Work done by its faculty covers medicine, public health, marine and atmospheric science, engineering and environmental studies. The University of Miami was invited to join the Association of American Universities in 2023, a group of many of North America’s large research universities. The university reported more than $413 million in research and sponsored program expenditures for fiscal year 2022 at the time.
Student Life Abounds with clubs and organizations and intercollegiate athletics. Miami’s sports teams are called the Hurricanes and they play in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The university’s mascot, Sebastian the Ibis, is a big part of its athletic identity.
